- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2013I will not go into detail about the plot beyond saying I really enjoyed the book. My hope is that Helms brings this character back. Everything is set for this storyline to become a series.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2015Don't ever turn down reading a Helms story. He is a great writer.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2014Intriguing mystery, a very good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2012I was privileged to be selected to read an advance copy of "The Unresolved Seventh" by Richard Helms. Despite the title, this is a stand-alone forensic procedural novel by an author with several series in his previous fourteen novels, but I wouldn't be surprised if this could be the start of an interesting new series.
Imagine a detective with Asperger's Syndrome; perhaps Sherlock Holmes or TV's "Monk" come to mind. While it might be impractical for a police detective, a forensic psychologist with Asperger's (a high-functioning form of Autism) makes a credible investigator in a murder mystery. His function is to help the District Attorney's Office prove the man charged with the crime can be prosecuted with a capital crime, but Ben Long's condition drives him to determine the truth of the case, by way of finding out about the suspect's mental and medical conditions, capabilities and handicaps.
Long's mind must "make all the pieces fit," which leads him to not only psychologically evaluate the suspect, but to investigate his health, background, and the circumstances of the crime. An average detective would have picked apart the crime easily, but since the police detective in the case had a confession, he was not motivated (or required) to pursue the truth; a flaw in our justice system, sadly evident in many cases, both factual and fictional.
This book is written in a crisp, lean, and flowing style, and I could have easily finished it in a single reading, if I had the time. I am unfamiliar with the author's previous works, but perhaps the style was used to reflect the protagonist's traits. There is only the necessary modicum of description. The reader is not distracted from the swift completion of the engrossing 300-page volume. Not a word is wasted, nor is any passage trivial. Everything falls into place, in a thoroughly enjoyable read. The author has a singular wit, which he uses only sparingly, but is most welcome.
"The Unresolved Seventh" is a satisfying, captivating, and riveting novel, and an intriguing new angle on mysteries and crime books.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2019I really enjoyed this book. The characters were interesting and the content intriguing. The dialogue was quick and kept me turning page after page. Looking forward to reading more Helms books!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2012I enjoy keeping a book on my bedside table and reading a few chapters each night before falling asleep. With "The Unresolved Seventh", each night I found myself wanting to read "just one more chapter" of this well-researched and well-written book. I enjoyed the details of each character's personality; with attributes as well as enough faults to make them very believable. The relationship between Paula Paige and Ben Long is complex, partly due to the quirks and lack of social graces attributed to Long's Asperger's syndrome, a type of high-functioning autism. When I reached the chapter which gives insight into the book's title, I said "AHA", which was exactly my sentiments at the end of the book as all the pieces of the story fell into place. This was most enjoyable to read, and I would enjoy a follow-up pairing of Ben Long and Paula Paige in another book.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2012Richard Helms' "The Unresolved Seventh" is simply a great, snappin', CRACKLIN' good story. Some of the best dialogue I've read since Tarantino (ok, yes, I DO read Tarantino... I'm a film guy so shut up!) The lead character Ben Long is SO easy to fall into -- all the right quirks in all the right places -- and brings insights to the plot that you never would have thought of yourself. Until you read them. And then you say "Of COURSE!!!!" It all seems so easy when you have someone like Rick Helms leading the way.
(PLUS you'll get a pretty damned good education in wine and food!)
Just a great read. I'm pretty sure we'll be hearing more about Ben Long in the years to come.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2012A terrific book, an interesting and sometimes abrasive lead, and a excellent cast of characters. Look this way, look that, but the leads solution to a very difficult problem is put right in front of the reader. One of the most interesting leads I've ever seen in a novel.
It looks as if Helms is getting close to best-seller territory. He paints interesting background, creates memorable characters, and adds the backstory, and the interesting facts that we did not know that we wanted to know. He has much going for him and this book will add to the Rick Helms canon. Absolutely a 5 star pick.
